Study of knowledge and recognition of the patients and the staffs on the cockroaches in hospitals


Abstract
To determine knowledge and recognition of the patients and the staffs on the cockroaches in hospitals, a survey was made toward them by using questionnaires from July 1994 to September 1994. The patients and the staffs were randomly selected for the survey from 6 hospitals which have over 200 beds in Pusan and Kyungnam area. The sample numbers of the patients and the staffs were each 150. However, 115 and 133 questionnaires from the patients and the staffs, respectively, were used for the data analysis. The results obtained were as follows.
1. The cockroach detection rate by the patients was 60.7% of them. The detection rates by female patients and the younger patients were significantly higher than those of male patients and the older patients (p<0.005).
2. 26.6% of the patients and 24.8% of the staffs have had allergies from the cockroaches. Also, 78.3% of the staffs have mentally suffered from nuisance by the cockroaches (p<0.05).
3. The degrees of the knowledge¡¯s on the cockroaches and the control methods were 70/100 at the patients
and 69/100 at the staffs. Also, their knowledge were mainly obtained from mass media (45.0%).4. The cockroach control was performed by 88.8% of the investigated hospitals and 55.1% of them contracted with the pest control operators to reduce the cockroach populations in the hospitals. The operators used mainly insecticidal baits for the cockroach control (47.0%).
5. The management and the education program for the cockroach control were required by the patients(80.5%) and the staffs(84.0%) in the hospitals.
